Plans & SIMs 10
Do I need a data plan?
Yes — every GPS tracker needs a SIM and a data plan to report its position; without one it’s just a box. Use one of ours ($7/mo Power Saver with 2-minute updates, or $10/mo Real-Time with 10-second updates) — pick it on the tracker page when you buy the tracker and its first year is included — or bring your own SIM.
Can I bring my own SIM?
Yes. Buy any of our trackers outright and you’re free to run your own active Australian 4G data SIM in it — the tracker’s page says which SIM size it takes. Platform access isn’t included with the tracker alone: pick “With platform access only (No SIM or data)” on the tracker page (first year included, then $5/mo or $50/yr), or take one of our data plans, where it’s included. Our plans exist because most people would rather have the tracker, plan and platform on one bill — but BYO is a first-class option, not a workaround.
What networks does the SIM use?
Every Crucial Tracking data plan ships with a SIM that works across both the Telstra and Optus mobile networks. The SIM isn’t tied to one carrier: the tracker connects to whichever of the two networks it can see at the time. Two networks instead of one removes a single point of failure, but no mobile network covers all of Australia, and reception in any given spot depends on terrain, buildings and distance to the nearest tower. More on the dual-network SIM.
Can I move a plan SIM to another tracker?
Not on your own. The SIM that comes with a Crucial Tracking data plan is IMEI-locked to the tracker it’s set up with, so it only works in that device. Replacing a tracker, or want the plan on another of our trackers? Email team@crucialtracking.com.au or call 0413 418 743 and support can re-pair the SIM to the new tracker.
Are you part of Telstra or Optus?
No. Crucial Tracking is independent. We’re not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an agent of Telstra or Optus. Every Crucial Tracking data plan ships with a SIM that works across both the Telstra and Optus mobile networks; the tracker, the plan, the platform and the support come from us, not from a carrier.
What happens after the first year?
Your plan renews at its normal price: $7/mo or $70/yr for Power Saver, $10/mo or $100/yr for Real-Time. Same SIM, same platform, nothing else to buy. There’s no minimum term. Want the other plan later? Cancel the plan that came with your tracker and take out the other one as a self-serve subscription from the Pricing page; tell us and we’ll keep the SIM active.
Which plan is my included first year on?
The plan you pick when you buy: Power Saver (2-minute updates) or Real-Time (10-second updates), on the term you choose. Its first year is included, and from year two it bills at its normal price — $7/mo or $70/yr for Power Saver, $10/mo or $100/yr for Real-Time.
What does a tracker cost, all up?
The tracker’s price is shown on its page, and it’s the same with or without a plan. Pick a plan with your tracker in the builder, on the tracker page or on the Pricing page (Power Saver $7/mo or $70/yr, Real-Time $10/mo or $100/yr) and its first year is included: SIM, data and full platform access, nothing more to pay in year one. From year two the plan renews at its normal price until you cancel, and there’s no minimum term, so the minimum total cost is the tracker price. Bringing your own SIM? Pick “With platform access only (No SIM or data)” instead and your first year of platform access is included, then $5/mo or $50/yr.
Do yearly plans cost less?
Yes — an Annual plan costs two months less than paying monthly ($70/yr Power Saver versus $84 over twelve months; $100/yr Real-Time versus $120). Year one costs the same whichever cadence you pick, because the first year is included with the tracker. From year two the plan renews at its normal price: $70/yr or $100/yr on an Annual plan, $7/mo or $10/mo paid monthly.
How do I cancel a plan?
Self-serve from your account (Manage subscriptions), or contact support and we’ll cancel it. There’s no minimum term. Monthly plans stop at the end of the paid month — payments already made aren’t refunded. Annual plans renew each year until cancelled: cancel within 30 days of a renewal for a full refund of that payment; after that we may offer a partial refund case by case. Cancelling during the included first year simply ends the plan — there’s nothing to refund and nothing further to pay, and the tracker is yours: you paid for it outright. The tracker itself, and a plan bought in the same order, are covered by our 60-day money-back guarantee. This doesn’t limit your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Full details in our subscription policy and refund policy.

Which tracker suits my situation?
For most vehicles — cars, utes, 4WDs and trucks, anything with a 12 V or 24 V battery — the battery-mount: two wires onto the battery, an easy fit, and not something a driver can just unplug. Where theft protection comes first, the hardwired: wired in behind the trim where it’s hard for a thief to find, and it can drive an optional starter-cut relay (fitted by an auto electrician). The plug-in OBD is the quickest start and moves between vehicles, but it’s easy to spot and unplug. Anything with no power of its own — trailers, tools, gear — takes a battery-powered asset tracker; compare the four types side by side, and before you buy any tracker, from anyone, read what other tracking companies don’t tell you.
Which tracker for a caravan, boat, 4WD or trailer?
It depends on what you own and what you want from it. A caravan, a boat or a trailer with its own battery, and a motorbike, take a Battery-Mount tracker: two wires onto the battery, and it reports live. A 4WD or a ute where theft is the worry takes a Hardwired tracker, wired in behind the trim where it’s hard for a thief to find. Tools and gear with no power take a battery-powered tracker you fix on and leave. Our what-to-track page goes through each one with the tracker that fits: Pick by what you own.
Why not just use an AirTag or a Bluetooth tag?
For some jobs, fair enough: a tag is cheap to buy and needs no plan. But it has no connection of its own. Its position is reported only when someone else’s phone passes within Bluetooth range, which is thin away from cities and quiet overnight in a yard. It’s also designed to protect the person it travels with, not you: a phone that notices an unknown tag moving along with it can alert its owner, and a tag that has been away from its owner for a while plays a sound when it’s moved, so a thief is told it’s there. And it gives no live map, no movement alerts and no trip history. A 4G tracker carries its own SIM, uses the mobile network and reports on its own, as often as its plan says, wherever it has reception — which is what helps a recovery. Wired in behind the dash, it’s hard for a thief to find as well.
Will a plug-in OBD tracker fit my vehicle?
It needs an OBD-II port: a D-shaped, 16-pin socket, usually under the dash on the driver’s side near your knees, sometimes behind a small cover or trim panel. Most cars, utes and vans sold new in Australia since the mid-2000s have one, petrol or diesel, and so do most hybrids. Not every electric vehicle has one, and some imports, older Japanese imports especially, may use a different socket. So do many heavy trucks and buses: for those, a hardwired tracker is the better fit. A plug-in must never get in the way of your legs or the pedals: where the port sits too close, a hardwired tracker suits better. Not sure about yours? Email team@crucialtracking.com.au or call 0413 418 743 with the make, model and year before you buy, and we’ll check.
How long do asset tracker batteries last?
It depends on how much the tracker moves. Our built-in single-use battery tracker is rated for up to 7 years at one report a day; each tracker’s page says what to expect.
Will it work where I am?
Your tracker uses the network coverage provided by Telstra and Optus, Australia’s two largest mobile networks. If one network isn’t available where your vehicle or asset is, the tracker can connect on the other. Two networks instead of one removes a single point of failure, but no mobile network covers all of Australia, and reception in any given spot depends on terrain, buildings and distance to the nearest tower. Out of range, most of our trackers keep logging and report the trail when signal returns — each tracker’s specifications say whether it does. All our trackers are 4G — 2G/3G networks are switched off in Australia, so beware older trackers still sold online. Unsure about your area? Send us the postcode and we’ll check before you buy.
Hardwired or plug-in — which should I get?
For theft protection, the hardwired: it’s wired in behind the trim where it’s hard for a thief to find, and it can drive an optional starter-cut relay (fitted by an auto electrician). For speed, the plug-in OBD: it goes into the OBD-II port in seconds and moves between vehicles, but it’s easy to spot and unplug. For most vehicles, though, the battery-mount is the best all-round choice: two wires onto the battery, an easy fit on almost any vehicle, and not something a driver can just unplug. Compare the four types side by side.
How long does the battery actually last?
It depends on the tracker and how much it moves. A battery-mount tracker runs off the caravan’s or boat’s own battery, so there’s nothing to charge — it draws under 5.5 mA in its deepest sleep, at 12 V. A battery-powered tracker’s battery life depends on how much it moves. Each tracker’s page says what to expect from its battery.
Fitting & theft 5
Do I need an auto electrician?
Battery-mount tracker? Two wires onto the battery terminals: a spanner is all you need, or any auto electrician can fit it.
Plug-in OBD tracker? Plug it into the OBD port. No tools, no wiring.
Hardwired tracker? Two wires behind the dash. Fit it yourself if you’re comfortable with vehicle wiring; otherwise it’s a quick job for an auto electrician. A starter-cut relay is always theirs to fit.
Not for a battery-powered asset tracker — it needs no wiring at all.
Does it need any wiring?
Not into the vehicle. A battery-mount tracker connects straight to the caravan’s or boat’s battery with two wires — no ignition wire to find — and a battery-powered tracker needs no wiring at all. On a boat, fit the battery-mount tracker somewhere sheltered: it’s rated IP65 (dust-tight and protected against water jets) and isn’t made to go under water. Want the tow vehicle covered too? See our vehicle trackers.
What if someone finds the tracker?
A hardwired tracker alerts you if the power is cut and keeps reporting on its backup battery, and a plug-in tracker alerts you if it’s pulled from the port. Whatever happens to the tracker, every position it has already sent stays on the platform, so you still have the trail.
What happens if someone steals the car?
You’ll know it’s moving the moment it shouldn’t be — movement and ignition alerts go straight to your phone, and the live map shows where it’s headed. A hardwired tracker also alerts you if someone cuts its power to try to kill it, and keeps reporting on its backup battery.
If it happens: 1. Open the live map from the alert. 2. Call the police (000 if it’s happening now) and tell them where it is. 3. Don’t go after it yourself.
What happens if the caravan, boat or trailer moves without me?
A battery-mount tracker sends a movement alert to your phone as it happens, and a live trail on the map from then on — a solid head start for you and the police to get it back. A battery-powered tracker reports on a schedule to save its battery, so how soon you hear depends on how often it’s set to report.
Platform 3
What platform do I get?
One platform for every tracker, at platform.crucialtracking.com.au, hosted in Australia. Live map, alerts, trip history, PDF reports, live traffic, automatic backups and integrations. It’s included with every monthly and yearly data plan. Buying a tracker without a plan? Pick “With platform access only (No SIM or data)” on the tracker page instead — your first year is included, then $5/mo or $50/yr. Already own a tracker with its own SIM? Add platform access on its own for $5/mo or $50/yr, billed from the first payment. See what the platform does.
Where do I log in?
At platform.crucialtracking.com.au — one login for everyone. Your store account — orders, subscriptions and details — is at /account/login.
Where is my tracking data hosted?
On our platform, on Australian servers. Your stored movement history stays in Australia, and support comes from the people who run the system.
Shipping & returns 3
How fast is shipping?
Free delivery, Australia wide. We ship multiple times a week, and orders typically dispatch within 1–2 business days. We hold stock locally — no drop-shipping, no three-week mystery from overseas.
How does the 60-day money-back guarantee work?
Ask for a refund within 60 days of delivery, even if the tracker is installed, as long as it works and isn’t damaged. Send it back complete: the tracker, everything that came with it, our SIM if you bought a plan, and its original box if it came in one. An incomplete return costs a 20% restocking fee. Return postage is yours unless it’s faulty. One claim per customer. Full details. This doesn’t limit your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
What does the warranty cover?
Every tracker sold new has a 24-month warranty. If it fails in normal use, we repair or replace it. Rechargeable batteries are covered against failure (not normal ageing); single-use cells if they’re faulty on arrival. Warranty details. This is on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
