    A battery-mount tracker for a caravan with its own battery, a battery-powered one for a trailer without, the IP68-sealed CT-A05 for a boat — and add one to the tow vehicle if you're watching that too.

    Fit it, done

    Two wires onto the caravan battery's terminals, or cable-tie, tape or screw a battery-powered tracker in place — no wiring into the vehicle at all.

    Geofence the driveway or the storage yard. If the caravan moves without you, your phone knows.

Before you hitch up

How long does the battery actually last?

It depends on the tracker and how often it reports. A battery-mount tracker runs off the caravan's own battery, so there's nothing to charge — it draws under 5.5 mA in its deepest sleep, at 12 V. A battery-powered tracker lasts longer the less often it reports: live updates every 2 minutes or every 10 seconds run any battery down far faster than a daily check-in. Each tracker's page says what to expect from its battery.

Does it need any wiring?

Not into the vehicle. A battery-mount tracker connects straight to the caravan's battery with two wires — no ignition wire to find — and a battery-powered tracker needs no wiring at all. If you want the tow vehicle covered too, a hardwired tracker wires in once and never needs charging, or a plug-in one goes into its OBD-II port.

Will it work on the road up north?

Your tracker uses the network coverage provided by Telstra and Optus, Australia's two largest mobile networks. If one network isn't available where your vehicle or asset is, the tracker can connect on the other. Two networks instead of one removes a single point of failure, but no mobile network covers all of Australia, and reception in any given spot depends on terrain, buildings and distance to the nearest tower. What happens if the caravan moves without me?

You get a movement alert on your phone the moment it happens, and a live trail on the map from then on — a solid head start for you and the police to get it back.
